Long before Prosper Noggin existed, Melinda Wherrell experienced a style of learning that shaped her understanding of education forever. As a student, she was part of a small experimental cohort within the public school system where teachers explored new approaches to student learning. Students learned in mixed-age classrooms. Teachers stayed with the same group of students as they progressed through the grades.
Learning wasn’t passive. Students built projects, ran experiments, solved complex problems, and presented ideas.
Curiosity wasn’t discouraged.
It was expected.
The teachers invested deeply in their students and challenged them to think critically, explore boldly, and pursue excellence.
That experience left a lasting impression, because it revealed something powerful: students grow when they are challenged, supported, and surrounded by adults who believe in their potential.
An Unexpected Path: From Big Tech to the Next Generation
Before returning to education, Melinda spent nearly two decades in the fast-moving world of technology.
It was the early days of the internet, a time when innovation moved quickly, and teams were building entirely new systems. The work demanded creativity, problem-solving, adaptability, and strong leadership.
Later in her career, Melinda moved into designing training programs and guiding organizations through large-scale technology change. She helped teams learn complex systems, adapt to new tools, and grow through transition.
Without realizing it at the time, those experiences were preparing her for something else entirely, helping students learn how to think, adapt, and grow.
THE TURNING POINT
Homeschooling Her Twins
When Melinda and her husband began homeschooling their twins, something unexpected happened.
Their curiosity about learning deepened, and they began noticing something else.
Many families were interested in homeschooling, but unsure where to begin.
Some felt intimidated. Some felt overwhelmed. Some simply wished they had a stronger learning community and more support.
That realization sparked the vision that would eventually become Prosper Noggin.
